Meta Ads: why creative became the new targeting

On Meta, the “who” is increasingly decided by the system. What’s left for you to control is the “what” you show. Here’s what Andromeda, Advantage+, videos made from static images and the AI assistant Meta is testing to build campaigns actually change.

Target with an ad card at its centre and a phone showing ads: creative as targeting

From interests to creative

Until a few years ago, a Meta campaign started with the audience: ages, locations, interests, lookalikes. The ad was the last step. Today the order is reversed. Meta’s system works out on its own who to show your ad to, and the main thing it uses to do that is the ad itself.

The image, the video, the copy, the tone, even who appears in it, tell the algorithm who the message fits. That’s why we say creative has become the new targeting: whatever audience you want to reach, you first have to “show” it in your ad. It’s one of the big changes of 2026 in digital marketing.

What Andromeda is and why it matters to you

Andromeda is the system Meta introduced at the end of 2024. Its job is to choose, in a fraction of a second, which of the millions of available ads make sense for each user. Only the ones that get through this “filter” reach the auction, where a second model, GEM, helps decide which one is finally shown.

The practical takeaway is simple: if you don’t have the right ad for someone, they’ll never find you, however well you’ve set up your audience. And if your ads look too much alike, to the system they’re almost the same ad. Ten versions of the same banner with a different button colour don’t give Andromeda ten options. They give it one.

That’s why, since 2025, Meta itself has recommended creative diversity over narrow targeting. What “diversity” means for your business, how many ads and how different, is exactly where campaigns are won or lost today.

Advantage+: when the system picks audience, placements and budget

Advantage+ is Meta’s name for its automated features. With Advantage+ audience, the interests and audiences you set work as a suggestion, not a limit. With Advantage+ placements, the system decides on its own whether to show your ad on Facebook, Instagram, Reels, Stories or Threads. And with Advantage+ budget, it moves money to wherever it sees results.

In new campaigns, these automations are now the default. You can still switch them off, but Meta nudges you towards them, and in plenty of accounts they perform well.

In October 2026 Meta also opened Customer Lifecycle Strategy to all advertisers. It lets you tell the system whether a campaign is aimed at new or existing customers. It’s one of the few steering wheels you have left, and it’s worth using properly.

Advantage+ isn’t “set a budget and forget it”. The system optimises towards whatever you tell it counts as a result. If the data coming from your site is wrong or incomplete, it will very efficiently bring you the wrong results.

Video from static images

Video keeps gaining ground across Meta’s platforms, mainly because of Reels. Until recently, though, a small business without video had a practical problem: nothing to upload.

Since October 2026, creating video from static images in Advantage+ creative has been available to all advertisers. You provide product photos or images you already have, and the system builds a short video with motion, music and text. For businesses with a product catalogue, Meta has also made it simpler to create video straight from the catalogue.

It’s a useful tool, but it doesn’t replace thinking. A video made automatically from the same three photos everyone in your industry has doesn’t add diversity. It just gives the same message another format. The difference lies in which images you provide, in what order, and with what story.

The AI assistant that builds campaigns

The next step is already being tested. In October 2026 Meta showed its AI business assistant inside Ads Manager: you talk to it in plain language, and it can create ad elements and change a campaign’s targeting or budget. It remembers what you tried last quarter, your seasonality and the goals you’ve described to it. The abilities that let it make changes on its own are still in testing, and most accounts don’t have them yet.

At the same time, Meta has opened up connecting external AI tools to campaigns to more advertisers. The direction is clear: setting up a campaign is becoming a conversation, not a series of buttons.

That makes the work faster, not easier. An assistant that changes a budget in one sentence can also make a mistake in one sentence. The question “what do we let it do on its own, and what needs approval” will be one of the basics of 2027.

What all this means for your ads

If the system decides who sees your ad but relies on what you give it, the centre of gravity of the work shifts:

  • Less time on targeting, more on who sees which message.
  • Different ideas, not variations: a different problem, a different person, a different format, not just a different colour.
  • A steady rhythm: new creative before the old ads “tire”, not after results drop.
  • Clean data: a properly set-up pixel and Conversions API, so the system learns from real sales.

How all this turns into a specific plan, how many creatives, which ideas, in what order, and how to test them without burning budget, depends on your industry, your budget and what has already worked in your account. That’s the work we do every day.

FAQ about creative on Meta

Is targeting no longer needed on Meta?

It is, but it works differently. The audience you set is now more of a guideline than a limit. The strongest “targeting” is the message of the ad itself.

How many ads do I need in each campaign?

There’s no single number that fits everyone. How different they are from each other matters more than how many there are. Ten nearly identical ads count as one.

Can I rely only on the videos Meta’s AI makes?

As a start, yes: it’s better than having no video at all. In the long run, though, if everyone uses them with the same images, they won’t set you apart.

When will I get the AI assistant in my account?

Meta hasn’t given a date. The abilities that make changes to campaigns are still in testing and are opening up gradually.

On Meta today, the account with the best ads usually beats the one with the cleverest settings. If your results have stalled, or your cost per result keeps rising for no obvious reason, the answer is usually in the creative, not the settings. At CNCTECH we look at your account and your creative together and tell you what’s missing.
